“Japonisme” is a French term that refers to the popularity and influence of Japanese arts and designs, such as Ukiyo-e print arts by Hokusai, in western Europe in the 19th century. It is said that these Japanese arts made significant influences on many European artists like Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet and Edgar Degas, and triggered the birth of “Impressionism”. It is a fact that Japan was deeply involved in the design of Hawaiian shirts. The Hawaiian shirts of early days were made from Japanese fabrics brought to Hawaii by Japanese immigrants, and many of the “Japanese pattern” shirts were derived from traditional and ancient Japanese designs. In 1940-50s a large number of fabrics designed by talented artists and painters in the Japanese textile industry were printed in Japan and exported to Hawaii and mainland of USA to make Hawaiian shirts. The “National Treasure of Japan” collection is developed by synchronizing Japanese and Western arts. It is not merely making Hawaiian shirts using original arts by the great Japanese artists, but shaping into textile designs by incorporating the design patterns of Vintage Hawaiian shirts that Sun Surf has researched for a long period of time.

 

 

19世紀後半にヨーロッパで流行した「ジャポニズム」。葛飾北斎をはじめ、日本が世界に誇る浮世絵師たちの手掛けた作品は、ヨーロッパの美術界に絶大な影響を与えた。かのフィンセント・ファン・ゴッホやクロード・モネ、エドガー・ドガといった芸術家たちも浮世絵から影響を受けており、その衝撃は「印象派」誕生のきっかけともなった。

 

アロハシャツについても、そのデザインには日本が深く関わっている。最初期のアロハシャツはハワイへ渡った日系移民が和装の生地を使って仕立てたものであり、アロハシャツの「和柄」には、日本古来の意匠に由来するものが多い。また戦後の1940～50年代にアロハシャツの生地は日本でプリントされており、友禅などに携わっていた絵師たちがアロハシャツの図案を手掛けていた。より優れたデザインを生み出すため、当時のブランドは日本やアメリカ本土からデザイナーをハワイへ招き、ジョン・メイグスのような才能あふれる画家たちもアロハシャツのデザインに関わって、今なお人々を魅了する芸術性の高い作品が数多く生まれていった。

 

日本の芸術と西洋の芸術が互いに影響し合うことで生まれる新たな魅力。「日本の意匠 National Treasure of Japan」では、原画の図案を単にシャツへ落とし込むのではなく、サンサーフが長年研究してきたヴィンテージアロハシャツに見られるデザインパターンを取り入れることで、日本が世界に誇る芸術家たちの名作をテキスタイルデザインへと生まれ変わらせている。

“The 108 Heroes of the Popular Suikoden” by Utagawa Kuniyoshi

歌川国芳　「通俗水滸伝豪傑百八人之一個」

 

This “KUNIYOSHI” textile design is inspired by the vintage Hawaiian shirt (top of the photo) with the motifs of the King Kamehameha family produced by the “Malihini” in the mid-1950s. In the “National Treasure of Japan” collection, the art of KUNIYOSHI UTAGAWA, who is widely known as one of the legendary masters of the Japanese Ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints and painting, is cut out into a circle and laid out attractively on the base design of traditional Japanese ikat-pattern.

 

テキスタイルデザインの参考にしたのは、1950年代中期に「マリヒニ」というブランドが手掛けたヴィンテージアロハシャツ（写真上）。ハワイの伝統工芸であるラウハラ編みをデザインしたグラウンドに、カメハメハ王家をモチーフに描いた「王家の肖像画」がレイアウトされている。サンサーフ「日本の意匠 National Treasure of Japan」では、日本古来の文様である矢絣（やがすり）をシャツの地にデザインし、国芳の作品「通俗水滸伝豪傑百八人之一個」を円形に切り抜いてレイアウトすることで、図案の持つ迫力をより強く引き出している。

“Rooster and Hen with Hydrangeas” by Ito Jakuchu

This “JAKUCHU ITO” textile design is based on a vintage Hawaiian shirt (top of the photo) produced by the famous brand “Kamehameha” in the late 1930s. A peacock with wings spread is boldly depicted, and the vivid gradation and decorative feathers are perfectly portrayed. Sun Surf succeeded in faithful duplication of the delicate gradation colors in the art, “the Rooster and Hen with Hydrangeas” by JAKUCHU ITO, by using the printing techniques and experiences that Sun Surf has accumulated for a long period of time.

 

優れたデザインのアロハシャツを数多く生み出したブランド「カメハメハ」が、1930年代後期に手掛けたヴィンテージがベース（写真上）。翼を広げる孔雀が大胆に描かれており、色鮮やかな体色のグラデーションや飾り羽の細やかな羽毛に至るまで版で丁寧に表現されている。この「紫陽花双鷄図」についても、原画が版画ではなく肉筆画であることから、サンサーフが長年培ってきたプリント技術を駆使し、繊細な色のグラデーションを忠実に再現。作品の魅力を最大限に活かすため、シャツ全体を使ってホリゾンタル・パターンに仕上げた。

“Kabuki Actor Ōtani Oniji III as Yakko Edobei” by Tōshūsai Sharaku

東洲斎写楽　「三代目大谷鬼次の奴江戸兵衛」

 

SHARAKU is one of well-known Japanese Ukiyo-e print artists, especially famous for his portraits of Kabuki actors. Our Sharaku shirt was inspired by the vintage pullover shirt (top of the photo) originally produced by “Japanese Bazaar” brand in the 1930s, which used “postcard pattern” that was often seen on the shirts made in the early days of Hawaiian shirts. Sun Surf completed the all-over print pattern by laying out one of his masterpieces as if it is a postcard.

 

東洲斎写楽の「三代目大谷鬼次の奴江戸兵衛」をアロハシャツへと生まれ変わらせるにあたり参考としたのは、1930年代に「ジャパニーズバザー」が手掛けたプルオーバースタイルのヴィンテージ（写真上）。このようにポストカードをモチーフとした通称「絵はがき柄」は、最初期のアロハシャツに見られるデザインである。サンサーフでは、写楽が原画でデフォルメしている「手」や「目」などをクローズアップし、ヴィンテージの「絵はがき柄」のように個々のモチーフをオールオーバー・パターン（総柄）に組み合わせてレイアウトした。
